A gummy smile is when a significant amount of gum shows above the top teeth during smiling. This can be due to various factors, including the way the upper lip moves or the size and shape of the gums and teeth. It’s a common aesthetic concern for many seeking a more balanced smile.
Gummy smile is a condition in which your upper gums are visible during smiling. It can happen because of several reasons. You might be born with a narrow maxilla (upper jawbone) or the muscles that raise your lip during smiling action might be very active.

• Enamel & gum problems
As a general rule, the more enamel you have & the less gum you have, the less likely it is that you’ll have a gummy smile. For example, a person who has shorter teeth & more gum will appear to show more of their gums when smiling than someone with longer teeth & less gum. A number of factors can affect enamel levels, including tooth grinding & acid reflux. Gum problems can include overgrown or infected gums caused by smoking or plaque buildup from not brushing properly.
• Genetics
Many times, individuals inherit their smile from their parents. The shape of your upper jawbone may also play a role in how much gum shows when you smile.
• Jaw misalignment
If your upper jaw is misaligned with your lower jaw, or if your jaw protrudes forward at an angle
The symptoms of gummy smile can be very subtle. It will show up as a small gap between your gum & your teeth when you smile. This is not a serious condition, but you should be aware of how it affects your appearance before you go out in public.

• The gap between the gum & teeth may vary in size based on how much you are smiling. When you smile wide, the gap will become more noticeable because it becomes larger than usual.
• Your smile may look less attractive because of this gap between the gum & teeth. This can make them look crooked or uneven, especially if there is a large amount of space between them when you smile wide open.
